Reintepretations and multivoquality along the time in a monumental area: Mateo Salado archaeological complex (Lima, Peru)

Through a theoretical approach towards an integrated or articulated history, supported by the methodology of the Cultural Continuum (Espinoza et al. 2023), this article outlines the multiple ways in which Pyramid E of Mateo Salado Archaeological Complex (Lima, Peru) has been used and therefore reinterpreted and monumentalized by various human groups that have coexisted or succeeded one another over time. This shows that a monument is a multivocal and constantly changing space, and not just the public and representative manifestation of an elite in power. However, to ensure that there is not a single discourse that dominates, the monument must enable spaces for meeting and democratic dialogue, such as the event “Meeting for fraternity and religious tolerance” that has been held in Mateo Salado since 2018.
