About the journal

Basic information

Movimento is an open access journal published by the School of Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Dance of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It aims to disseminate Brazilian and international scientific production on topics related to Physical Education, with regard to their pedagogical, historical, political, and cultural aspects. Therefore, the journal receives, reviews, and publishes manuscripts debating the phenomena and topics investigated, having the Human and Social Sciences as their theoretical, methodological, analytical, and interpretative foundations. The journal accepts original manuscripts in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Since its first issue, published in September 1994, journal Movimento has shown its willingness to lead the Physical Education community to think about its specificities. Having emerged as a multidisciplinary journal in 2003, it underwent a ‘specialization’ process and started publishing only articles from the socio-cultural and pedagogical sub-areas of Physical Education. That development not only changed the process of knowledge dissemination in the area but also gave visibility to knowledge produced in Physical Education at its interface with the Human and Social Sciences.

Since 2009, Movimento has been evaluated annually by the Journal Citation Report (JCR)-Web of Science (WoS). Until 2020, it was the only Brazilian journal of Physical Education and Sports (PES) to appear in the Social Science Citation Edition (SSCI) division of that renowned international database. On the Brazilian scenario, it became part of the Scielo Collection in the second half of 2020.

Our goals for the next few years include consolidating Movimento as a journal that publishes articles in the three main languages of the American continent: Portuguese, Spanish, and English; reaffirming the journal’s stance as a scientific-cultural heritage in Brazil’s Physical Education; improving our manuscript management process in line with new publishing technologies; and following an internationalization process with out ‘feet’ set in the Latin American territory and our ‘eyes’ focused on disseminating research that is engaged and socially relevant for the continent.

Instructions to authors

Scope and Policy

Scope:

Sections

Movimento consists of the following sections:

Focus: This section is dedicated to debates around internationally relevant topics induced by the Editorial Board or formally proposed by researchers in the area. Once the section proposal has been defined/approved, a guest editor will be designated to coordinate the manuscript’s review process according to criteria and rules set by Movimento. Each section will have a maximum of eight manuscripts by authors linked mostly to foreign institutions. The texts must be published in English and, simultaneously, in Portuguese or in one of the other two languages accepted by Movimento, i.e., Spanish.

Controversial Issues: In this section, Movimento proposes a permanent dialogue with its scientific community, providing opportunities to update current debates and inducing reflections on its specific knowledge area. The Editorial Board reserves the right to invite authors to publish their work in this section and encourages participation by others who may wish to take part in the debates. Similarly to the In Focus section, these articles will be selected by the Editorial Board.

Original Articles: This section includes works resulting from scientific research presenting original data and findings related to experimental and/or observational aspects of philosophical, historical, sociocultural, and pedagogical nature, including descriptive analysis and/or inferences based on data produced by the authors. The structure must follow a format recognized in the specific knowledge area (Physical Education at its interface with the Human and Social Sciences) and contain sections and subsections related to the following items: Introduction; Theoretical Framework; Methodological Decisions; Analysis; Discussion; Conclusion.

Essays: This section includes articles with reviews and/or theoretical-conceptual reflection on a given topic, based on the essayist’s authorial experience, which challenge understandings consolidated in the scientific field and point to interpretations that have not yet been envisioned, without necessarily resorting to literature review or empiric production.

Note: Sections “In Focus” and “Controversial Topics” will be published at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

Obstacles and limits to submission and publication

Movimento will publish a maximum of two works of the same authors or co-authors per year. Therefore, before starting the submission process, please check the status of all authors involved.

- Since April 14, 2018, Movimento will simultaneously review up to two articles of the same authors and co-authors. If this limit is exceeded, new submissions will be dismissed regardless of merit. Thus, the author making the submission must check the status of each of the others.

- Since July 6, 2019, Movimento is no longer accepting manuscripts on instrument validation.

- Since June 30, 2020, Movimento no longer accepts manuscripts submitted in question-and-answer format from interviews with prominent personalities in the area.

Manuscript format and preparation

Manuscript Structure and Size

Using the TEMPLATE is mandatory do define the manuscript’s structuring and formatting. CLICK HERE to download the template.

Manuscripts’ lettering should in Arial typeface 12 pt., 1.5 line spacing, and must not exceed 6,000 words including titles, abstracts, key words in 3 languages (use Tools - Word count). Bibliographic references do not count for article size. Use italics only for foreign words or et al. and In:.
The manuscript’s title should be simple, concise, and clear. You should avoid titles longer than 15 words, with periods, commas, abbreviations, quotation marks or ironic tones. Considering that Movimento has an international scope, these choices can make it difficult for non-native readers to retrieve your article using database search engines and understand it.

At the discretion of the Editorial Board, works by guest authors in sections In Focus and Controversial Topics may exceed the number of words indicated above.

4.2 Organizing the manuscript

Using the rules of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) is recommended when presenting manuscripts to journals (NBR 6022/2003), references (NBR 6023/2018), abstracts (NBR 6028/2018), citations in documents (NBR 10520/2002), and progressive numbering of sections in a document (6024/2003), as well as table standards of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

4.2.1 Illustrations (photographs, drawings, graphs, etc.).

Illustrations should be in the body text, numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, and cited as FIGURES, with titles at the top and sources at the bottom, according to examples available in the TEMPLATE. They must allow perfect reproduction and meet the standard of the article regarding typeface and font size. Resolution must be between 200 and 300 dpi.

Copyright holders must grant their express permission to use copyrighted illustrations according to Law 9610 of February 19, 1998. Authors must be aware of legal sanctions in case of violations.

In addition to being included in the body text, illustrations – specially photographs and graphic drawings – must be sent as SUPPLEMENTARY DOCUMENTS during the submission process.

4.2.2 Tables and charts

Tables and charts should appear in the body text numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and headed by their titles, and comply with the standard of the manuscript in terms of typeface and font size, according to examples available in the TEMPLATEThey must be limited to the minimum necessary and sources must be cited. In the final edition of the article, reviewers will be able to advise on changes in the number and size of tables in order to keep the journal’s standard. Tables and charts cannot be included as images under any circumstances, as their content is part of the word count.

4.3 References

References are the documents cited in the text according to NBR 6023/2018. They must be listed alphabetically at the end of the manuscript, aligned to the left, and placed at the end of the article, citing sources, under the title REFERENCES, which must be centered. Authors’ names must be cited in full. For better understanding and viewing, CLICK HERE TO ACCESS GUIDELINES AND EXAMPLES OF REFERENCES for various types of materials.

4.4 Authors’ anonymity

In organizing the text/file for submission, authors must suppress all information that allows identifying them. That is crucial to preserve their anonymity and guarantee the blind review procedure. Therefore:

1. The text submitted should not contain information identifying the authors;

2. File properties should not include information identifying the authors. If you are using Microsoft Word, a tutorial to suppress such information can be found here.

Authors’ statements and details

In view of the definitions and procedures mentioned in the subsections above (3.1-3.5), authors must necessarily sign and submit the AUTHORS’ STATEMENTS AND DETAILS form together with the manuscript. To download this document, fill it out, and sign it, CLICK HERE. All authors must sign, which can be made digitally.

As for integrity and transparency in scientific activity, if the manuscript is approved, the information contained in the referred statement (those applying to the manuscript submitted and reviewed) will be incorporated into the final version to be published in a section entitled “editorial notes.” Click here to see an example of this section.

Manuscript submission fees (after qualifying)

In view of the significant decrease in public sources of funding to maintain its activities and in order to share costs among peers, journal Movimento will charge a submission fee of:

- R$ 200.00 for payments made from Brazil; and

- US$ 100.00 for payments made from other countries starting May 15, 2021.

Information regarding proof of payment will be sent to the authors only after the manuscript qualification stage, in which compliance with the rules and scope is verified. If the manuscript meets Movimento’s norms and scope, the authors will receive a notice with details for paying and submitting proof of payment. As soon as proof of payment is sent, the manuscript will proceed in the editorial flow.

It should be noted that the fee is exclusively intended to fund manuscript evaluation. Therefore, fees paid by authors will not be refunded, regardless of editorial decisions in any evaluation stage.

Manuscript submission

Manuscripts must be sent only in digital format through the online platform available at  http://seer.ufrgs.br/Movimento/user. Submission must be made by one of the authors and includes five steps:

5.1 Step 1: Indicate section and language, accept conditions, sign copyright statement

The submission process will start by indicating and registering the section (“Original articles” or “Essays” for continuous and open flow) and language of the manuscript (Portuguese, English and Spanish).

Then, the author registering the submission on behalf of all co-authors (if applicable) must state the manuscript’s compliance with the items below.
1. The manuscript fits the scope of Movimento (ESEFID/UFRGS), that is, it clearly addresses topics related to the field of Physical Education at its interface with Human and Social Sciences, more specifically in its pedagogical, historical, political, and cultural aspects. The journal receives, reviews, and publishes manuscripts debating the phenomena and topics investigated, having the Human and Social Sciences as their theoretical, methodological, analytical, and interpretative foundations.

2. This manuscript meets the four conditions for review detailed in Section 2 of the guidelines: 1. A maximum of two manuscripts by the same author or co-authors per year; 2. up to 2 simultaneous manuscripts by the same author/co-author; 3. no manuscripts on instrument validation; and 4. No manuscripts submitted in question-and-answer format from interviews with prominent personalities in the area.

3. All authors involved have signed the Authors’ statements and details form, which includes formal agreements, details, rights and responsibilities related to the manuscript’s production and publication.

4. The structure and format of the manuscript being submitted were based on the TEMPLATE and consider the mandatory elements described in the rules for organizing the manuscript, reference presentation, and inclusion of illustrations, tables, and charts (if applicable).

5. The authors have suppressed all the information that might lead to their identification from the manuscript, which is crucial to preserve their anonymity and ensure the blind review procedure. This has been done both for “the text” and “file properties”.

6. Authors are aware that once all of the items above are met, the manuscript will qualify for stage 2 (peer review – scientific merit). Then they will be asked for proof of payment of the submission fee. This fee refers exclusively to the evaluation process, and the amount paid will not be refunded regardless of the final result.

After meeting these requirements on behalf of all co-authors (if applicable), the author making the registration must record/reaffirm her or his agreement in a copyright statement, considering the adoption of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Finally, the author making the submission has access to the privacy policy and may, if necessary, submit comments to the editor who will head/conduct the review process.

5.2 Step 2: Uploading the manuscript

Step 2 of the submission procedure involves uploading the file that will be peer-reviewed (which meets the set of requirements described in the previous sections of these guidelines and does not contain elements identifying the authors).

5.3 Step 3: Including Metadata

In Step 3 of the submission procedure, the author making the registration must record a set of metadata identifying the authors and the manuscript.
The first field to be selected is FORM LANGUAGE. Since the information in the article (title, abstract and key words) must be registered in three languages, the author recording the data must do the procedure three times, according to the tutorial available here.

Then, details of all authors must be registered, considering the following guidelines:

Do not fill in the “Title” field (leave it blank).

- “First Name”, “Middle Name” and “Last Name” must be written in full, with only their initials capitalized.

- In “E-mail,” enter a functioning email address and check all characters.

- In “ORCID iD,” write the address provided by the ORCID platform at: https://orcid.org/my-orcidThis field must be filled in. Therefore, all authors who will be included must register on that platform and obtain their IDs (links) to fill in the field.

- The “Institution/Affiliation” field must be completed in the following order: Name of the University, Name of the institution’s unit/department, City, State. [Example: Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). School of Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Dance (ESEFID), Porto Alegre, RS]. Do not use periods after State or the country. This field MUST be completed.

- Select and register the author’s “Country”. This field MUST be completed.

- Fill in the “Bio” field with data on the author’s academic and professional history.

The items above must be considered for all authors (especially those indicated as mandatory). To add a new author, click on the ADD AUTHOR button.

Once all authors are registered, the metadata of the work being submitted must be entered:

- Work title in UPPER CASE LETTERS

- Information summary up to 150 words

- Up to 4 key words identifying the subject of the article, separated by periods. Use of Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) is recommended. Available at: http://decs.bvs.br/

- Support data on “Contributors and Development Agencies,” that is, people or organizations that contributed to the content or provided financial support for the work.

5.4 Step 4: Uploading Supplementary Documents

To enter supplementary documents, the author making the registration must upload the following files:

AUTHOR’S STATEMENTS AND DETAILS fully completed and signed by all the authors. Click here to download the document to be completed and signed.

- If the manuscript includes illustrations (photographs, image graphs, diagrams or other illustrations), in addition to being in the text file (entered in Step 2), they must be uploaded individually as supplementary documents (in this Step 4) in open format, i.e. the original file, on the system on which it was created rather than in closed image format, to allow for font adjustments.

5.5 Step 5: Confirmation

In this step, the system presents a list of the files uploaded in previous steps for checking. If the information is correct, the author making the submission must click on COMPLETE SUBMISSION. Confirmation emails will be sent to the author and the Editorial Board of Movimento informing of the new submission.

After this operation has been completed, the authors can follow the submission status by accessing the system as “Author”.

Manuscript review policy

Works with quality and relevance consistent with that of Movimento, considering the review process described below, will be selected for publication.

6.1 Review process

The process for reviewing manuscripts submitted to Movimento comprises three stages:

Stage 1 – Qualification

When a manuscript is submitted, the Editorial Board conducts the first review procedure, which involves verifying:

- If the author and co-authors do not have more than two manuscripts under review. If this limit is exceeded, new submissions will be dismissed without further examination.

- If the manuscript does not address instrument validation or is based on an interview format, which will not be accepted by Movimento.

- Whether the proposal matches the scope of the journal, detailed on the ‘about/focus and scope.’ The Editorial Board reserves the right to decide whether or not a manuscript fits the scope of the journal.

- Whether mandatory structure and formatting requirements have been met, according to directions available in Section 4 of these guidelines and the TEMPLATE.

- The absence of elements identifying the authors, either in the text or in file properties, according to guidelines in a tutorial that can be accessed here.

- Whether AUTHOR’S STATEMENTS AND DETAILS was uploaded as a supplementary document whose template can be downloaded here. The statement must be signed by all authors.

- Whether illustrations (photographs, image graphs, diagrams or other illustrations) contained in the manuscript were uploaded as supplementary documents.

If any problems are found regarding these items, the authors will be informed about the impossibility of continuing the review procedures. The Executive Editor will request the necessary adjustments or additions and set a deadline.

Stage 2 – Peer review (scientific merit):

Submissions approved in stage phase 1 will advance in the evaluation process. In this process, the steps are as follows:

- Verifying if proof of payment of submission fees has been sent as a supplementary document (learn more in Item 6, “Conditions for submission”). Authors will receive a message from the Editorial Committee stating that their manuscripts will proceed to the evaluation stage and that they MUST SEND PROOF OF PAYMENT as a SUPPLEMENTARY DOCUMENT. Submissions that do not include proof of payment within 10 days will be disregarded.

- A section editor will be appointed to coordinate the review flow, together with the Editorial Board.

- Anti-plagiarism software will be employed to verify the similarity of the manuscript submitted with other products published and available.

- At least two reviewers will be appointed. They should provide their opinions within three weeks.

- The reviewers will examine the work, considering the six guiding aspects below:

1. Innovation, originality, relevance: Whether the topic and purposes of the manuscript address issues that are important to the area of study, with originality and relevance. Whether it points out a knowledge gap and produces results that improve it. Whether it contributes to new reflections or questions in the area.

2. Coherence: Whether the work presents a logical argument in synch with the theoretical-methodological framework adopted. Whether the goals are clearly stated, and efforts are made to achieve them accordingly. Whether conclusions are reached that are in synch with the argumentative process and purposes.

3. Strength: If the manuscript is able to convince at a level equivalent to existing productions on the topic. Whether the statements are sufficiently substantiated to the point of standing when confronted with contrary arguments.

4. Purposefulness/convincing power: Whether the work is able to apprehend elements of the phenomenon under study. Whether the analyzes are sufficient to capture, present and convince about the veracity of the results regarding the phenomenon.

5. Linguistic register and technical standards: Whether the text register indicates mastery of formal written language. Whether technical standards adopted by Movimento are covered.

6. Research and publication ethics: Whether the study complies with agreed research ethics standards for investigations interfacing with the social and human sciences. Whether the publication complies with the basic guidelines for integrity in scientific activity.

- In cases of disagreement, inaccuracy or incompleteness regarding reviewers’ opinions, section editors may appoint other reviewers to collect further information about the manuscript based on the guidelines adopted. These new reviewers will also have three weeks to issue their opinions. Based on reviewers’ recommendations and opinions, the editor in charge will present a proposal for the Editorial Board to decide on the status of the submission. Possible scenarios include:

* The manuscript is approved for publication.

* Corrections, modifications, or additions are requested from the authors.

* Publication is denied.

- A decision to request corrections, modifications or additions does not mean acceptance, but rather that new rounds of review may be requested. The authors will be informed of the decision on corrections, modifications or additions and will have 15 days to present their view and submit the new version of the manuscript together with their views on the demands, if necessary. This occurring, the manuscript will go on to a new review round in which reviewers will be consulted again, preferably those who demanded changes. They will have three weeks to verify if the recommendations have been met. In these new rounds, if necessary, the section editor may also appoint another reviewer, who will also have three weeks to issue a consolidated opinion.
- Once all rounds have been concluded based on reviewers’ recommendations and opinions, the section editor will present a proposal for the Editorial Board to decide on whether to finally accept or reject the submission.

Stage 3 – Final review of standards, metadata, and descriptors

Manuscripts approved for publication go on to the editing stage, when they will be prepared for publication through the following steps:

- Review of bibliographic standards (citations, references, text formatting, illustrations, charts, and tables). In this stage, the Editorial Board reserves the right to proceed with grammatical revision of the texts and make corrections, as long as they do not change content.

- Review of the manuscript’s descriptors and metadata, observing correspondence between information in the text file and that entered on the SEER platform.

- After these two reviews, the texts will be sent to the authors for reading and corrections until a final version is approved. The authors will have 15 days to comment and submit the final version on the platform. Afterwards, the articles will be sent for layout and publication.

- If there is no manifestation by the authors by that deadline, the articles will be disregarded.

Integrity, ethics and commitment with open science

Integrity and ethics in research with human beings

Movimento adopts as Integrity in Scientific Activity parameters the Integrity in Scientific Research Guide of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (available at: http://www.ufrgs.br/propesq1/propesq/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/guia-para-integridade-em-pesquisa-cientifica.pdf), resolutions 466/12 and 510/2016 of Brazil’s National Health Council (available at: http://www.ufrgs.br/cep/resolucoes) when dealing with research carried out with human beings, and the principles contained in the Codes of Ethics of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE, available at: http://www.publicationethics.org/).

For research conducted in Brazil, authors must indicate the number registered on Plataforma Brasil and the institution of the Research Ethics Committee; for research conducted in other countries, use the equivalent registration in the country of origin of the article. If the research has not been assessed and approved by a Research Ethics Committee, authors should state that all ethical procedures contained in the aforementioned resolutions were fully complied with. This statement will be recorded in the document “Authors’ Statements and Details” described in Item 3.6 below.

Each author’s contribution must be specifically described.   To this end, we recommend using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), which provides guidelines for 14 functions that can be used to represent the roles normally played by contributors in academic scientific work. This taxonomy is available at: https://casrai.org/credit/

Movimento is aligned with the modus operandi of open science, on two pillars:

- Introducing the “Editorial Notes” section at the end of each article; informing and detailing the type of Use License (Creative Commons) and stating any conflict of interest, each author’s contribution to the article, any funding received, the existence and description of parameters adopted on research ethics, the editorial responsibility – specifying the editors involved in the editorial flow;

- on circulation and publicizing: disseminating Movimento’s production and activities on social media already established and in full operation (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) in order to interact with the academic – and especially the non-academic – community.

Movimento considers adopting other open science practices (preprints, open reviews, and primary research data), which will be addressed by the Editorial Committee in line with other journals in the area of Physical Education.

Conflict of interest

Likewise, Movimento establishes as a mandatory procedure that authors should indicate if their research was sponsored by funding agencies. Information on any financial support must be included. For instance, under Ordinance 206/2018, reference to the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) is mandatory in cases where it has fully or partially funded the research. Plagiarism and bad editorial practice

Preparação do manuscrito

Manuscripts approved for publication go on to the editing stage, when they will be prepared for publication through the following steps:

- Review of bibliographic standards (citations, references, text formatting, illustrations, charts, and tables). In this stage, the Editorial Board reserves the right to proceed with grammatical revision of the texts and make corrections, as long as they do not change content.

- Review of the manuscript’s descriptors and metadata, observing correspondence between information in the text file and that entered on the SEER platform.

- After these two reviews, manuscripts are sent back to the authors for any adjustments, until a final version is approved. The authors have 15 days to express their views on reviewers’ requests and post the final version of their works on the platform, otherwise their submission will be cancelled.

- When the authors have answered, the full articles are sent for proofreading (Portuguese, English and Spanish), a service performed by a specialized company hired by Movimento.

- After proofreading, the manuscripts go to layout in PDF and to XML markup.

- When these stages are concluded, the articles are published as PDF files on Movimento’s website (Portal de Periódicos da UFRGS) and sent for publication as PDF and XML in the Scielo collection.

- After review in the original language, authors are encouraged to present a revised English version of the manuscript, which must be translated by professionals appointed by Movimento. The translated articles return to the pre-preparation and publication cycle described above.

Journal Movimento encourages publication of english language versions

Journal Movimento expresses its interest and encourages authors to publish English versions of articles approved in Portuguese/Spanish. The main purpose is to increase visibility and circulation of scientific works on Physical Education in other countries and to meet the requirements of the international bases in which Movimento is indexed.

We emphasize that the version to be translated into English must be the latest one, that is, the one approved by the Editorial Committee in Portuguese/Spanish and considered ready for publication. Additionally, we emphasize that translation costs will be borne by the authors and that the English version must meet the same quality standard as Portuguese/Spanish language versions. Otherwise, Movimento reserves the right to publish only the previously approved Portuguese/Spanish version. We recommend the companies listed below.

Submission Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The article considers the scope of journal Movimento (ESEFID/UFRGS), that is, it clearly addresses topics related to the field of Physical Education in its interface with the Human and Social Sciences, specifically its pedagogical, historical, political and cultural aspects.
