Scope and Policy

Revista de Economia Contemporânea (Journal of Contemporary Economics) publishes only original, unpublished scholarly works that should give a theoretical or methodological contribution to the field of Economics. It welcomes manuscripts addressing domestic or international issues/topics in the following areas:

  • Economic Thought, Economic History, Economic Method, and Political Economy
  • Macroeconomic Theory, Financial System, Growth Models and Applications
  • Microeconomic Theory, Industrial Economics, Innovation, International Trade and Applications
  • Development Economics, Labor Market, Employment and Income Policies, Public Policy and Welfare

A scholarly work or academic paper reports original research results, or reviews existing research results (whether theoretical or applied). For that it is usually structured as follows: an introduction describing the research theme, problem, object, and goals; a literature review section; a methodological section describing data gathering and sources, analysis methods, and research procedures; a section that presents and discusses the results; and a conclusion.

An original, unpublished scholarly work is a paper that does not contain any form of plagiarism, has not been simultaneously submitted for publication to any other journals, nor has been previously published as a book or a book chapter. A manuscript based upon a working paper, a conference paper, or a dissertation / Ph.D. thesis will be considered an original, unpublished paper provided that the author declares it in the submission form.

The study of a particular case (being it a country, a region, a municipality, an industry, a sector, a business, or a product, etc) is only of interest to this journal provided that the manuscript produces replicable results and delivers an original, innovative contribution (whether theoretical or methodological) to the literature in Economics.

Literature review articles, book reviews, and shorter communications, as well as comments to works previously published (where authors’ right of reply is ensured), may also be welcomed at the discretion of the editors.

Form and preparation of the manuscripts

Each submission should include at least two separate files in DOC or DOCX format: one containing the title page and the other the full paper.

Essential title page elements include authors' names, institutional affiliation, and contact information; indication of corresponding author; each author’s contribution to the paper in case of multiple authorship.

Full paper includes: a concise informative title; an abstract with no more than 200 words; three to five keywords; two to five JEL classification codes for the paper theme; body of the text; references; annexes and appendices. Title, abstract, and keywords must be written in Portuguese and English.

Regarding form and structure, scholarly works or academic papers usually contain an introduction, describing the research theme, problem, object, and goals; a literature review section; a methodological section describing data gathering and sources, analytical methods, and research procedures; a section that presents and discusses the results; and a conclusion.

Regarding language and length, manuscripts must be written in either Portuguese or English and contain up to 14,000 words, including bibliographic references, appendices, and annexes.

Regarding authorship, in the case of multiple authorship with four or more authors, the contribution of each author must be specified on the title page or in the "Comment to the Editor" section of the submission form.

Concerning citations and references, the standard of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) should apply.

Footnotes should be used sparingly and only to provide additional information, but never to make citations and references.

Regarding originality, if the contribution is based upon a conference paper, master's dissertation, Ph.D. thesis, or Working Paper, the authors must inform it on a footnote on the title page.

Regarding the file format, REC only accepts files in DOC or DOCX format. PDF files will not be processed for evaluation.

Remitting the manuscripts

Submissions to REC must be placed at: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/rec/login

REC is a non-fee open access journal. That means that authors are not charged any submission or article-processing fees.

Peer review and assessment

The mere submission of a manuscript to REC does not imply its publication. All submissions are subject to pre-evaluation by the editors and, if pre-accepted, subjected to double-blind peer review.

The pre-assessment by the editorial board verifies paper’s adherence to REC’s editorial scope and basic criteria of form, quality, and originality, including the verification of plagiarism. Manuscript’s acceptance or rejection by the editors will be communicated exclusively by e-mail to the author(s). Submissions rejected in the pre-assessment stage will be automatically archived. Submissions accepted by the editors will be subjected to double-blind peer review.

The following aspects of the manuscript are evaluated: adequacy of pre-textual elements (title, keywords, abstract); relevance of research theme and problem; originality of the contribution; usefulness of figures; text organization and writing; adequacy of the literature review (thematic/methodological coverage, degree of literature updating, depth of the review, review organization quality); methodology (suitability to paper theme and study objectives, description and specification, application); empirical data, if applicable (adequacy to objectives and methodology, degree of data updating, geographic coverage, tabulations).Peer review may result in the rejection or acceptance of the manuscript, with or without the need for review by the author(s). The results will be communicated exclusively by email to the author(s).

Authors have the right to contest the editorial decision in a letter addressed to the editors providing reasons and justifications. The editors may or may not accept the authors' justifications and reason for reconsidering the editorial decision, at their full discretion.

Publication and Archiving

Manuscripts accepted for publication will undergo proofreading, standardization of citations and references according to ABNT rules, and formatting following REC’s graphic design patterns. Each manuscript will receive a DOI code and e-location for digital identification on publishing platforms. Proofs will be submitted to author’s approval before publication.

The edited manuscripts will be published in pdf format in the following platforms: Directory of UFRJ Journals and in the Scielo, where they become available for consultation and download on free and open access.

Authors are free to pursue the self-archiving of their manuscripts without embargo of time once the manuscripts are accepted for publication.
